A National Scientist and a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Angel Alcala is one of the foremost authorities in marine science in the Philippines. He has succeeded in establishing no-take marine reserves on Philippine coral reefs, which has been adopted in other Southeast Asian countries, and has authored or co-authored more than 270 papers and books on Philippine herpetology and marine science. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus at Siliman University where he is also Chairman of the Board of Advisers of the university’s Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management. Today, he continues his research and advocacy programs on environment, amphibians and reptiles, and marine biodiversity.
